Terms & conditions
Last updated 6 October 2026
These terms apply to your use of csecitation.com and its tools (“the service”). By using the service, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the service.
1. The service
The service formats references and in-text citations in Council of Science Editors (CSE) style, looks up source details from public databases, and provides related tools and guides. It is free to use and needs no account.
We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the service at any time, without notice.
2. Accuracy and your responsibility
We work hard to make every reference correct, but we can’t guarantee it. Source details come from third-party databases and publisher websites that are sometimes incomplete or wrong, and instructors and journals often add their own requirements.
You are responsible for checking every reference before you submit or publish your work. The service is a writing aid, not a substitute for your own review.
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the service for anything unlawful, or to infringe anyone’s rights;
- send automated or bulk requests, scrape the site, or place an unreasonable load on our servers or the services we connect to;
- use the URL lookup to reach private networks or to fetch content you aren’t entitled to access;
- try to disrupt, probe, or gain unauthorised access to the service or its infrastructure.
We may block access from anyone who breaks these rules.
4. Your content
References you create belong to you, and you are free to use them in any work. They are stored in your browser, not on our servers, so you are responsible for exporting anything you want to keep. See our privacy policy for details.
5. Our content
The site design, code, guides, and examples are owned by csecitation.com. You may share links to them and quote short passages with attribution, but you may not copy or republish substantial parts without permission.
CSE style is described in Scientific Style and Format: The CSE Manual, published by the Council of Science Editors. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Council of Science Editors. Other product and organisation names belong to their owners.
6. Third-party services
Lookups rely on services such as Crossref, DataCite, PubMed, arXiv, Open Library, and Google Books. We don’t control them and aren’t responsible for their availability, content, or policies. Links to other websites are provided for convenience only.
7. Disclaimer
The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and uninterrupted availability.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, csecitation.com is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss, or for any loss of data, marks, grades, or publication opportunities, arising from your use of the service. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
9. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The date at the top of this page shows when they last changed. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the updated terms.
